Australia has built one of the world’s strongest retirement savings systems. The challenge now is transforming it into one of the world’s strongest retirement systems.
That transformation won’t be achieved by any single provider. It will require financial institutions, healthcare providers, aged care organisations, insurers, advisers, technology partners and government working together to support Australians throughout retirement. The question is not whether the ecosystem needs to evolve. It is who is best placed to lead that evolution.
Superannuation funds are uniquely positioned to do so.
No other organisation combines such long-standing relationships with millions of Australians, deep understanding of members’ financial circumstances, significant investment capability and a legislative obligation to improve retirement outcomes. Funds engage with members throughout their working lives and increasingly throughout retirement itself. They have the trust, scale and continuity to become the anchor of a more connected retirement experience.
Leadership, however, is not about owning every service. It is about taking responsibility for the overall member experience. Retirement extends well beyond superannuation. Members move between decisions about income, housing, health, aged care, government services, insurance and wellbeing. They do not experience these as separate industries, and they should not have to navigate them as if they are. The opportunity for super funds is to become the trusted coordinator of this broader ecosystem, ensuring members can access the right expertise, at the right time, through trusted partnerships.
This requires a new operating model. Rather than measuring success by the quality of individual products or transactions, funds will increasingly be judged by the quality of outcomes they enable. That means investing in interoperable platforms, trusted data sharing, intelligent guidance, ecosystem partnerships and service models that place the member not the organisation at the centre.
The Retirement Income Covenant challenged funds to think beyond accumulation and support members in achieving better retirement outcomes. The next stage of that evolution is to recognise that better outcomes cannot be delivered in isolation. They depend on collaboration across an increasingly diverse network of organisations. The funds that embrace this role will help shape not only their own future, but the future of Australia’s retirement system.
At IQ Group, we believe superannuation funds have both the opportunity and the responsibility to lead this transformation. We help funds design the strategies, operating models, data capabilities and ecosystem partnerships that turn ambition into action. Because the future of retirement won’t be built by any one organisation, it will be led by those willing to bring the entire ecosystem together around one shared purpose; helping Australians live better in retirement.
